May 31, 2012 Music Icon dead at age 58 The music world has suffered another serious blow today. English rock icon and Knight of the Order of the British Empire, Sir Panthür Martin has died, his family says. Known for his outrageous antics and legendary drug use on and off stage, Martin died of unknown causes at his home Shrimpfordshire in Scotland. Born in a modest fishing village in the south of England on September 3, 1953, Panthür Martin started his career as a studio musician before releasing his first album in 1973. Millions of records, alcohol induced comas, glue addictions and countless groupies later, he became a recluse in the 90’s. Many of his record shattering achievements remain unbroken today. Martin is the only artist in history to have a sextuplet platinum album in the 70’s. With tongue in cheek song titles such as “Run your panties up my flag pole,” “Tube Top Tonya,” “With Liberty and Panthür for all,” and the classic “Backstage Pass Out,” Martin was hailed as an icon and trendsetter from virtually every genre of popular music. Tributes are pouring in via Twitter and other media outlets. Funeral arrangements will be private. A tribute to Martin is being planned at a later date, a representative for his family says. Litigation Panthür has been the subject of a number of lawsuits brought against him over the years. People still come out of the woodwork claiming to be the love child of him and some anonymous groupie. Most claims have been dropped or settled out of court. Members of the animal rights group PETA assaulted him with red paint on the red carpet of an awards show in the mid 90’s. They called him a murderer for wearing Panther skin jackets and pants. He sued them for assault and was able to prove that his designer only used the skins of Panthers who died of natural causes. The case was settled out of court. He sued a British tabloid over a story in the 1980’s that said he was born with a vestigial tail. The actual story was that he was born with four toes on one foot and six on the other. He had the sixth toe removed and grafted onto the foot with four toes. He was awarded ten million pounds ($16,107,806 dollars) in damages. He sued Fender guitars for using a quote from an article without his permission. Even though the quote was used to promote his own Black Panthür signature model Stratocaster, he said they used the quote without his knowledge. “I play Fender or I don’t play” was a quote taken from the Mick McMick article in Rolling Stone. He sued Kiss for plagiarism for the track “Creatures of the Night.” He claimed the song was a rip off from his “Ride the Panthür” album called “Creatures for Tonight.” It was settled out of court. Panthür fun facts Did you know? Ted Nugent’s Indian costumes were inspired by Panthürs “Leathür and Feathürs” era. “Dimebag” Darryl Abbot took his moniker from the Panthür song, ”Dimebag Derelict.” Lars Ulrich from Metallica said,” If there were no Panthür, there would be no Metallica.” Ronnie James Dio wrote the song “King of Rock and Roll” with Panthür in mind. When George Michael wrote the mega hit “I want your sex,” he was inspired by the Sex record. When Rob Halford left Judas Priest, Panthür was asked to join the band. Panthür declined, citing “artistic differences.” Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" was inspired by Martin's "The Blackest Day" from his Holiür than Thoü album. Panthür Martin has a street named in his honor in his home town of Shropfordshire. Panthür had an extensive collection of custom Jagüar cars. Jagüar customized thier logo with the dieresis ( ¨ ) just for him. He sold, traded for drugs, or wrecked all the others in bizarre and often unnecessary accidents. Only 2 are left. His wife Amy has one, the other is in a private collection. There is a restaurant in Shropfordshire that serves a classic steak and kidney pie called "The Panthür Pie." The Panthürfest is being organized in part to raise awareness about the threatened habitat of the North American Panther. All proceeds will go to the North American Panther Preservation Fund (NAPPF).
